We are actively campaigning on a number of issues affecting the East Mendip area. Please follow the links below to find out more about each campaign. 

FrackingFracking is likely to become a huge issue in Somerset and Wiltshire, with areas just east of Frome, and others in North Somerset, vulnerable to fracking. This could move very fast, and we need to be ready with a massive grassroots campaign of resistance. The Green Party is totally opposed to all forms of fracking and is working with local campaign groups to raise awareness and combat the fracking threat. Read more

Fossil Fuel DivestmentAt the COP21 conference in Paris last year, world leaders signed up to a commitment to drastically reduce the use of fossil fuels worldwide in order to avoid catastrophic climate change. This is good news for the planet, and bad news for fossil fuel companies, which now increasingly represent risky investments as well as being bad for the climate. Yet many investment and pension funds still include these companies in their portfolios. One of these is the pension fund of Somerset County Council, which has a staggering £121.5 million invested in fossil fuels. We are campaigning for Somerset County Council to divest completely from fossil fuels. Read more

GlyphosateGlyphosate is a herbicide commonly used in farming and by councils to control weeds in public spaces, typically under the brand name Roundup. However, Glyphosate is harmful to health anad has been classified by the World Health Organisation as a likely carcinogen. We are campaigning for Mendip District Council to stop using Glyphosate. NHS: The health service is being catastrophically underfunded by the government. The recently published Somerset Sustainability and Transformation Plan (STP) for the NHS attempts to address this problem, but its proposals are unconvincing in several ways. Read more
