Green Mendip District councillor Shane Collins has spoken to the Somerset County Council Pension fund about disinvesting from fossil fuels. Just a short time after the flooding of Somerset and the recent decision to seek a separate precept on Council Tax Bills to pay for Somerset Rivers Authority, it was revealed that a huge £121m of Somerset Pension funds are invested in fossil fuel industries.
The pension fund evaded the suggestion of a freeze on new fossil fuel investments and a plan to disinvest from fossil fuels over the next 5 years. We will be joining the 350.org and fossilfree campaigns to get pension funds out of fossil fuels starting on 24th September. Get in touch with Shane to be involved.
