Natalie Bennett visits Frome

1 August 2015

We were thrilled when Green Party leader Natalie Bennett visited Frome on 21st July. Despite having very little notice to do much publicity for the event, the Cheese and Grain was packed, as more than 220 local people came along to show their support. Natalie spoke about the need for a new kind of politics, based on the principles that we must live within the environmental limits of the planet and that everyone should have a decent standard of living and a right to live without fear. She also expressed the Green Party's strong opposition to the Government's new austerity measures, in particular proposals to cut tax credits and housing benefit for families with more than two children, which will increase child poverty.

Earlier in the day, Natalie visited Frome Medical Centre where the Frome Renewable Energy Co-op have been installing their first solar power generation site. She praised local projects to develop renewable power generation and criticized the government's planned cuts in support for solar and wind technologies which she said could bring huge economic and jobs benefits to rural communities while providing clean energy. Natalie also met members of local bus users group FAVBUG and the Don't Cut Us Off campaign, currently campaigning against cuts to several services which pass through Frome, Rode and local villages - she pledged continuing Green Party support for a fully restored and funded public transport system.
