Show your love for the climate this Valentines week

31 January 2016

As part of the Fossil Free nationwide Show the Love campaign, two events in Frome will positively explore the issue of how we must invest to protect the climate and the preciousness of our environment.

'Bursting the Bubble! The End of Fossil Fuel', a panel discussion and Q&A will take place on Thurs 11th Feb at 8pm, upstairs at the Cheese and Grain, Justice Lane, Frome, BA11 1BE. We'll discuss the issue of the 'Carbon Bubble' which affects fossil fuel companies whose assets must remain unused to avert catastrophic climate change. Such companies are now dangerously risky investment both financially and environmentally. Campaigns to disinvest funds from dirty energy companies are gaining ground, and there are much better alternatives available in increasingly efficient renewable energy technologies.

To speak on these topics we'll be joined by:

Sam Lund-Harket of Global Justice Now. Sam campaigns on  climate justice and to end the UK financial sector's involvement in harmful energy projects.

Shane Collins, one of three new Green Party Councillors on Mendip District Council and one of the directors of the Green Gathering festival.  He is a long time green activist currently working on the petition to get Somerset County Council Pension fund to divest £121,505,000 from fossil fuels.

Anna Francis, Resilience Officer at Frome Town Council, focusing on helping Frome households, organisations and businesses become more resilient, self-reliant and sustainable by reducing energy demand, promoting reduced car use, increasing the use of renewable energy, and reducing waste.

We'll be gathering from 7.30pm for a more informal social chat before the event begins at 8pm. Entry is free and the bar and cafe will be open.

On Sat, 13th Feb, we'll be hosting the Show the Love stall from 10am, also at the Cheese and Grain. There will be lots of information available on climate change, divestment and wider environmental issues, and we'll be inviting people to tell us why they love our precious planet. All these love notes to the world will be assembled together throughout the day on a world map.

We'll then gather in the Cheese and Grain cafe from 2pm for a Green Tea and more discussion on ways forward to show the love and save the climate. This will also be a chance to meet your Green Councillors - all three councillors on the Green Party group at Mendip District (Shane Collins of Frome Keyford, and Des Harris and Stina Falle of Frome Market) will be on hand to discuss local and council issues.
