6 February 2016
On Fri 5th Feb, Green councillor for Frome Shane Collins presented our petition for Somerset County Council to divest its pension fund from fossil fuel companies, at County Hall in Taunton. The council fund has over £121 million invested in dirty energy companies - bad investments, both environmentally and financially.
Over seven hundred people signed the petition urging the council to heed the advice of financial experts and remove its investments from overvalued fossil fuel companies. As Shane points out, the council has recognised the importance of fighting climate change, with Somerset having experienced the devastation of the floods on the Levels in 2013, but seems unwilling to acknowledge how it contributes to climate change itself with these unwise investments. We hope the voices of hundreds of us who signed the petition will persuade them to reconsider.
