Hinkley, the energy gap and Government assault on renewables industry

3 September 2016

As uncertainty continues over the future of the massively overpriced nuclear project Hinkley C,government figures show that the renewable energy schemes we should be focussing on instead are being drastically reduced. Installations of small scale schemes (under 5MW) have all but disappeared, with no new small scale wind, hydro or anaerobic digestion projects at all since January, and a significant reduction in new solar projects. Green Party MEP for the South West Molly Scott Cato argues that this reduction is entirely due to government policy, in particular changes to the Feed-in Tariff which previously encouraged such projects. She said, "This is a sector with enormous potential not only for filling the energy gap and creating thousands of jobs, but also for generating home-grown energy that gives power back to communities rather than leaving it in the hands of giant corporations and foreign governments. It is a scandal that this sector, which was beginning to thrive in the UK, has been so badly hit."

Please sign the petition calling for a clean renewable future for the South West incorporating wind, solar, tidal lagoon and biomass power, creating many more jobs than Hinkley and ensuring our energy security for the future. You can also write to your MP to encourage the government to reject Hinkley.
