Somerset County Council plan to "redesign" library services, with the stated purpose being the "need to consider efficiency and cost reduction options." This is about attempting to save money whilst hoping to maintain the current service. There is an estimated reduction in library spending over the next three years of £500,000.
A crucial element of the proposals are "workforce restructure", a euphemism for staff reduction and the use of volunteers, with "most (our emphasis) of our libraries likely to retain a predominantly paid workforce."
Library closures seem likely, and while the well-used Frome Library is probably safe from closure, other libraries in the county will not be so lucky.
Libraries play a crucial part in health and well being, preventing social isolation and supporting our communities. The County vision statement states "Somerset Libraries are a dynamic, evolving and integral part of the community that open up a world of opportunities for reading, understanding and discovery." We say these assets deserve to be properly staffed and funded. There is to be public consultation in early 2018 about these proposals. Protect our library service, have your say!
